Members of New York’s Tectonic Theater Project spent more than 18 months in Laramie, Wyoming conducting interviews with anyone willing to speak with them. For Greg Pierotti and the writers of The Laramie Project, there were challenges. Tensions were high because the town’s local residents were trying to come to terms with what is now America’s most well-known antigay hate crime. Dave O’Malley’s investigation into the killing indicated that the murder was motivated by homophobic hate because the victim, Matthew Shepard, was gay. But not everybody in town agreed. To make things worse, nearly seven years after the killing, a major Prime-time news magazine arrived in town with an intent to discredit Dave’s “flawed" theory.
